The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) is a milestone document in the history of human rights. Drafted by representatives with different legal and cultural backgrounds from all regions of the world, the Declaration was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in Paris on 10 December 1948. It sets out, for the first time, fundamental human rights to be universally protected.
“ ...recognition of the inherent dignity and of the equal and inalienable rights of all members of the human family is the foundation of freedom, justice and peace in the world ” —Preamble to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, 1948
The UDHR was an international response in part to the atrocities of World War II to say never again, sadly, even today many people in the world still have their basic human rights violated. They do not have liberty, freedom of expression & equality before the law & economic, social & cultural rights, including the right to participate in culture, the right to food, the right to work & the right to education.
