Who we support.

Isaiah House, South Africa - Elijah and Rachel Mthembu

Picture
Rachel is a young woman from St Stephens Belrose who has gone into the mission field in South Africa, and is being supported financially and spiritually by the St Stephens community. Based in Durban she works with young people in crisis through the Isaiah House organisation. Rachel is a trainer and counsellor. The Isaiah House is a Christ-centered community development ministry. The Isaiah House seeks to position the people of Lower Molweni to know Jesus Christ and to be transformed holistically. The REBUILD Team focuses on educational and vocational development. The RESTORE Team invests in emotional, relational, and physical healing, and the RENEW Team centers on spiritual transformation and growth.
Being able to make a difference in the lives of hurting people or families in the community Isaiah House serves is what inspires Rachel to carry on.

Bridge of Hope, Indonesia

Picture
Bridge of Hope is a Christian micro-enterprise development organisation working with families trapped in poverty in the Manado region of North Sulawesi, East Indonesia. By assisting family businesses and facilitating community support programs, Bridge of Hope seeks to empower communities to build a better future.
In 2001 a group of concerned Christians from Sydney's Northern beaches initiated Bridge of Hope after learning of the refugee crisis in the Manado region caused by religious persecution in 2000 and since. Bridge of Hope was established to allow an ongoing partnership between concerned Australians and those struggling in one of our nearest neighbouring countries. Microenterprise Development was identified as the most practical, appropriate and sustainable method to help these people help themselves.

Over the last few years, St Stephens have sent teams to visit and support staff in Bitung, and encourage small business owners in the development of their businesses.

Wycliffe Bible Translators, Indonesia - Philip and Guinevere Swan

Picture
Philip and Guinevere Swan together with their children Soren, Reuben and Autumn, are long time members of St Stephens, now based in Indonesia with Wycliffe Bible Translators.
Our close neighbour Indonesia has the greatest translation need of any country in the world – 400 Bible-less people groups, 280 with an urgent need.  Many Indonesians speak Indonesian as a second language but most only properly understand the Bible when they read it in their mother tongue. Traditional animism, the worship of ancestors and spirits, still heavily influence people’s lives.  Islam is rapidly gaining influence through the influx of transmigrants from other islands of Indonesia.  The church today has a strong presence in some areas but there is still a great need for biblically-based leadership, Bible translation and discipleship training in Papua.

The 2,500 Kemtuik people live 45 minutes drive from Sentani in NE Papua.  In July 2008 the Kemtuik New Testament was published but the Kemtuik people need the whole counsel of God, and they are asking for the Old Testament to be translated.  Papual translator Pak Yakob is motivated for this task but needs help.  Philip & Guinevere will be helping to facilitate this OT project by providing mentoring and exegetical assistance.

There are three, possibly four other neighbouring language groups who have expressed a strong interest in having their own NT.   Philip & Guinevere will facilitating with the adaptation of the Kemtuik NT into these languages.

CMS, Broome - Chris and Karen Webb

Picture
Broome, the regional centre of the West Kimberley area, is a coastal town with a population of about 13,000. 30% of the population are Aboriginal people of diverse language and cultural backgrounds. Many other Aboriginal people from surrounding communities travel to Broome regularly to access various services and to visit family and friends.
Chris and Karen will be working in partnership with the Anglican Diocese of North West Australia, with the aim of growing and strengthening the Aboriginal church in Broome. They hope to encourage Aboriginal Christians by sharing their lives with them and teaching God's word.

Chris and Karen are supported financially and prayerfully by St Stephens.

Scripture in Primary Schools, NSW

Picture
Scripture in schools is our mission field at home to our own community. Currently several St Stephens members teach children weekly in our closest public primary schools - Belrose, Mimosa, Kambora, Wakehurst and Frenchs Forest Public Schools. St Stephens has been a champion of Scripture teaching among local churches for many years, and currently we supply all the teachers for Belrose Public School.

Lessons are 30 – 40 minutes with amazing rewards, both for teachers and for students.  For teachers it’s an opportunity to get deeper into the Word, so that what we teach comes from our hearts and not just our heads.  On the other side of the equation, it’s rewarding to watch faith develop from when the students arrive in kindergarten, start asking questions around Year 3, and develop in their understanding of a personal God who loves them and wants them to be part of His family. Often this is the only time children learn about God and his love for them and their families.

Scripture teachers undergo mandatory “safe ministry” training as well as courses run by Anglican Youthworks to equip them to teach effectively.  Teachers also follow a curriculum with lesson plans and student workbooks or work sheets. There is always practical application in the lesson material, so that the children develop in their faith walk.

The Forest Association for Christian Education (FACE Inc.) is a cooperation of churches in the Forest area of Sydney.
FACE was established in November 2011 by the co-operative vision and work of local Churches who desired that students in our local state high schools have the opportunity to hear the Gospel clearly explained.  The Board of FACE comprises pastors and members of local Churches.

FACE seeks to enable every student in our local State high schools to be exposed to the Gospel of Jesus Christ with ongoing opportunities to respond and be involved in a local Church.
