Scripture in Primary Schools, NSW
Scripture in schools is our mission field at home to our own community. Currently several St Stephens members teach children weekly in our closest public primary schools - Belrose, Mimosa, Kambora, Wakehurst and Frenchs Forest Public Schools. St Stephens has been a champion of Scripture teaching among local churches for many years, and currently we supply all the teachers for Belrose Public School.
Lessons are 30 – 40 minutes with amazing rewards, both for teachers and for students. For teachers it’s an opportunity to get deeper into the Word, so that what we teach comes from our hearts and not just our heads. On the other side of the equation, it’s rewarding to watch faith develop from when the students arrive in kindergarten, start asking questions around Year 3, and develop in their understanding of a personal God who loves them and wants them to be part of His family. Often this is the only time children learn about God and his love for them and their families.
Scripture teachers undergo mandatory “safe ministry” training as well as courses run by Anglican Youthworks to equip them to teach effectively. Teachers also follow a curriculum with lesson plans and student workbooks or work sheets. There is always practical application in the lesson material, so that the children develop in their faith walk.

Bridge of Hope, Indonesia
Bridge of Hope is a Christian micro-enterprise development organisation working with families trapped in poverty in the Manado region of North Sulawesi, East Indonesia. By assisting family businesses and facilitating community support programs, Bridge of Hope seeks to empower communities to build a better future.
In 2001 a group of concerned Christians from Sydney's Northern beaches initiated Bridge of Hope after learning of the refugee crisis in the Manado region caused by religious persecution in 2000 and since. Bridge of Hope was established to allow an ongoing partnership between concerned Australians and those struggling in one of our nearest neighbouring countries. Microenterprise Development was identified as the most practical, appropriate and sustainable method to help these people help themselves.
Over the last few years, St Stephens have sent teams to visit and support staff in Bitung, and encourage small business owners in the development of their businesses.

Wycliffe Bible Translators | Philip and Guinevere Swan
The young men began reading out loud, grins spreading across their faces. 'This translation is great! I can really understand it! What else have you got?' Responses like this are what motivate Philip and Guinevere to continue working alongside Papuans to translate the Bible. They long to see lives and communities transformed through people engaging with God's Word in their own languages and growing as disciples of Jesus.
After ten years based in Papua, Indonesia, in 2020 Philip and Guinevere relocated to Melbourne. They continue as Wycliffe members, working under SIL Australia, a partner organisation of Wycliffe Australia. Guinevere continues as a translation advisor for the Papuan Malay translation team, working to complete the New Testament for the two million speakers of this regional language. She also serves as a translation consultant for other teams in Indonesia. These roles involve both remote and face-to-face translation checking and mentoring. Philip continues to support the Nimboran translation team remotely, in their language development and Scripture engagement efforts. He is also drawing on his field experience and love of teaching to train future Bible translation and literacy specialists through SILA’s graduate and undergraduate programs, as well as working to build the capacity of Bible translation partner organisations across Asia and the Pacific. He plans to undertake Bible translation consultant training in 2021. wycliffe.org.au |
